Flash back

I grew up during a time when everyone treated each other like Family. We went outside to play, we got dirty…. We bought chips & candy from the Corner store downtown. We played “Red Light, Green Light”, Simon Says, “Hide and Seek”, Dodge Ball, Kick the Can, Baseball, Softball, and Football. We boxed each other, shot guns, slingshots and bows, rode bicycles in the summer and had snowball wars in the winter.

We ate beans & hot dogs, mac and cheese with peanut butter sandwiches at school. We walked everywhere barefooted, picked garden vegetables, strawberries, black & blueberries.

We weren’t AFRAID OF ANYTHING. If you fell down you would just get back up. We challenged each other everywhere…King of the hill. If someone had a fight, that’s what it was…a fight. Kids weren’t afraid of fake guns when I grew up. We left our houses as soon as we could in the morning and right after school till our neighbors would yell out for their children as a reminder to get in the house for the night. If one kid was called for dinner then we all knew to go home.

We watched our mouths around our elders because we knew If we DISRESPECTED any adult there would be a price to pay and we had manners and respect otherwise someone else’s parents put you in your place.

This was on my FB. I miss those days! I loved playing with my friends. Especially hide n seek etc at night!

I think we didn’t have too much worry about back then!😊😘

  1. Reminds me of my childhood. We were always dirty and always hungry. We roamed for what seemed like miles and miles. We played in out street, in the streets nearby. We didn’t know what swear words were. We went home when it got dark. And we did it all again the next day. Somewhere in there was school, some of the time.
You’ve brought back a lot of memories.

    1. i loved playing in the mud, going exploring. going to the playgrounds to play. we werent allowed to be too noisy in the neighborhood, because the neighbors liked it quiet. there were alot of kids on my streets, we could play with anyone and not worry about strangers.
Unlike today. when parents just let their kids yell and scream, and they have to worry about alot of creepers, and worse!
we only yelled and screamed if we got hurt, were in danger. if we werent in either, we got in trouble.
i got so mad at the lady down the street because she let her kids play outside at midnight during the weekday, they were yelling and screaming outside my window.
I told them if I had to come outside, I would give them a reason to scream. They shut their yap and ran back home.
i think i would rather be a kid again, play and have fun and not worry about adult responsibilities!

  2. I would like to play hide and seek with you! :-* Yes, I remember those times. I don’t think children of today experience life the way we did as kids. We also had to walk in the snow to school…uphill…both ways. 😉

    1. hmm a naughty version?
hee hee uphill both ways! I had to walk to school in a blizzard, waist deep in snow. i cried. but my babysitter made me go! grr! snow days! i dont think i ever remember having one of those. getting out of school because the snow was too much. we had to suck it up!

  3. It sounds ‘old’, but I am convinced kids today have not a clue how to play and have fun. And having our parents not know where we were? Shoot, the parental grapevine was FASTER than any cell phone ever created. We’d play with knives, bb guns, 22’s (OK, those were used to shoot small fowl we’d eat later), we’d fish, and bike, and inner tube in rivers by our 10 year old selves. I also started babysitting other kids and babies for cash at someone’s house about 9 or 10. I was born old and responsible. But, I had a ball when I was a kid!

    1. I agree with you. I am sometimes amazed that kids even know what outdoors is, because they are too busy on a laptop, video games, etc.
My friends mom would send me home if I didn’t let my mom know where I was.
Now parents just shrug. The kids will be home whenever.
